REP. PERRY TO HOST RON KAUFMAN ON SEPTEMBER 24TH
Discussion on outlook for Republicans in 2008 and the race for the White House
Representative Jeffrey Davis Perry (R-Sandwich) will be hosting an event on Monday, September 24th at 7:00pm at the Grange Hall, 91 Old County Road, East Sandwich for all who wish to meet and hear from Ron Kaufman, who is the Republican National Committeeman for Massachusetts. There is no donation requested for this event.
Ron Kaufman has served as an advisor over the last 25 years to Republican Presidents, Governors, Members of Congress and a host of elected and appointed officials at every level of government. Starting his career in national politics in 1978 with the campaign for President of George H.W. Bush, Ron has held major political posts in the White House and in the Republican Party. After working as a National Political Operative for the 1980 Bush for President Campaign, Ron went on to serve President Reagan as Regional then National Political Director of the Republican National Committee and was appointed the National Campaign Director for Vice President Bush’s 1984 reelection campaign.
Following the 1984 electoral landslide, Ron helped George H.W. Bush lay the political foundation for his successful 1988 presidential run, by founding the Vice President’s PAC and running the primary campaign in New Hampshire. After the victory on election day, Ron was asked by President Bush to serve as a top advisor in the White House, initially as White House Personnel Director and then as Assistant to the President and the White House Political Director.
Representative Perry will offer his insights on the current status of the GOP’s efforts in the Legislature as well as why he believes that 2008 will potentially be a strong year for the Republican Party. Ron Kaufman will address the outlook in Washington, DC and his insight of the race for the White House.
Complimentary light refreshments and soft drinks will be provided and we have a silent auction to benefit the Sandwich Republican Town Committee.
In an effort to demonstrate continuing support for the troops fighting the war against terrorism and in cooperation with Mary’s Bookstore in East Sandwich, at the event, “Support the Troops” signs will be offered for sale for a small fee.
Representative Perry stated his purpose for organizing such an event, “My goal with this event is to bring together conservatives from Cape Cod and have a positive discussion about the future of the GOP. I hope that many will attend and begin the process for a successful election in 2008.”

REPUBLICANS PROPOSE “COMMUTER BILL OF RIGHTS”
BOSTON—Representative Jeffrey Davis Perry (R-Sandwich) has joined House Minority Leader Brad Jones and Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei to ask legislators to adopt and abide by a “Commuter Bill of Rights” that ensures increased tolls and taxes are the last resort for solving the state’s $20 billion transportation funding gap.
From his State House Office, Representative Perry stated, “Enough is enough. State government needs to stop looking to commuters and taxpayers for its own failure to plan for future infrastructure needs. This Resolution is a strong step to make clear that increasing taxes is not an option.”
“The state is constantly going to the taxpayers for a bail-out when money gets tight,” Leader Jones said. “We owe it to the public to look for and execute every possible cost-cutting, streamlining measure before we even think about asking for more money to fix our roadways.”
“The state’s transportation infrastructure needs are significant and must be addressed in a timely fashion,” Senator Tisei said. “As legislators, we should be looking for creative solutions to fix this problem, and resisting attempts to impose any additional financial burdens on the taxpayers of the Commonwealth.”
The Commuter Bill of Rights was filed as a joint resolution and grants commuters the right to travel on safe roadways and bridges; the right to expect state officials will exhaust all available sources of funding before increasing taxes and fees; and the right to hold public officials accountable for finding and fixing problems with infrastructure. It also grants taxpayers the right to expect that the money they pay to the state will be used wisely to fund maintenance and repair of roads and bridges.
“We need to keep these principles in mind as we find a way to cover our $20 billion funding problem and pay for our broken roads and bridges,” said Jones, who drafted the Commuter Bill of Rights in reaction to news that a state commission will soon propose new toll booths on Interstate 93 and a hike in the gas tax.
Republicans are planning to file cost-cutting legislation that could save the state over $100 million a year by merging the Turnpike Authority with MassHighway; putting MBTA workers into the Group Insurance Commission and reforming their pensions to end double-dipping; and stopping the practice of borrowing money to pay the salaries of MassHighway workers.
The people who use Massachusetts’ transportation infrastructure and pay for its maintenance, repair and enhancement are endowed with certain important rights and reasonable expectations, and that among these are:
The right to travel on roadways, bridges and public transportation systems which are safe in their design, construction, maintenance and repair;
The right to expect that state officials will exhaust all available sources for funding maintenance and repair of transportation infrastructure before increasing taxes or fees;
The right to expect that public authorities charged with the design, construction, maintenance and repair of transportation infrastructure will discharge their responsibilities and use their resources efficiently, such that money and materials are used primarily for the good of infrastructure itself and not bureaucracy overseeing it;
The right to expect that reasonable efforts will be made to maintain and repair existing transportation systems before new transportation infrastructure is created; and,
The right to hold public officials accountable for preventing, diagnosing and fixing problems with state transportation infrastructure.

DEMOCRATS VOTE TO CONTINUE FINANCIAL DEALINGS WITH STATE SPONSORS OF TERROR
BOSTON—An overwhelming majority of House Democrats voted today to continue investing state public pension money in Iran, Syria, North Korea and Cuba, despite strong urging from state Representative Jeffrey Davis Perry (R-Sandwich) and the Republican caucus to divest from all countries identified by the government as state sponsors of terrorism.
During a debate on a bill to divest from Sudan, Republicans offered an amendment to add the other four countries to the list. It was defeated by the Democrat-controlled Legislature in a 122-32 vote.
Republicans made a second attempt to add only Iran to the list, but Democrats used a procedural maneuver to silence further debate on the issue.
“Many times I leave the State House shaking my head in disbelief and today is one of those days. Why the Majority would wish to allow the pension investments of State employees to be used to foster the policies of governments such as Iran, Syria, Cuba, and North Korea are beyond me. Today is a very disappointing day in the history of the Massachusetts Legislature” said Representative Perry following the House session today.
“I am appalled that those who profess to stand up for human rights and condemn acts of hatred and terror made a choice to stop investing in one country that violates those principles and not all of them,” said House Minority Leader Brad Jones, (R-North Reading) “A sponsor of terrorism is a sponsor of terrorism. I am disgusted and extremely disappointed.”
