REPRESENTATIVE PERRY RECEIVES HONOR
FROM CAPE BOY SCOUTS
YARMOUTH – This past Thursday evening, surrounded by Eagle Scouts both young and old, Representative Jeffrey Davis Perry (R-Sandwich) was named the Boy Scouts of America “Distinguished Citizen for 2007” by the Cape Cod & Islands Council. The Boy Scouts of America bestowed this honor on Representative Perry for his service to the community and his outstanding examples of "promoting self-reliance and other kindred virtues" during his last five years in office.
Each year the Boy Scouts of America, Cape Cod & Islands Council, hold an event to honor a Cape resident and leader for his work in the community. Past honorees have included the Figawi Charities Board of Governors, State Senator Henri Rauschenbach, Dorren and Chuck Bilezikian, District Attorney Michael O’Keefe, and Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings. The evening consisted of dinner, an auction to benefit the Cape Cod & Islands Council, and an awards presentation honoring Representative Perry.
Among his many family, friends, and supports in attendance on Thursday evening, he was also joined by former “Distinguished Citizen” recipients, District Attorney Michael O’Keefe and Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings. Both of whom praised Representative Perry for his political leadership and commitment to serving his constituents. Peter Meyer, Publisher of the Cape Cod Times, was also in attendance and presented Representative Perry with his award. Mr. Meyer was quotes as saying, “Representative Perry always follows his convictions no matter what the issue.” This sediment was echoed by others at the event and was the main reason Representative Perry was chosen for the award. A Massachusetts Senate Citation was also presented to Representative Perry on behalf of Senator Therese Murray (D-Plymouth).
In a statement following the event, Representative Perry said, “I am truly humbled to have been chosen to receive this award. The Cape Cod & Islands Boy Scout Council is a wonderful and respected organization and to have been sought out by them as a result of my work is a great honor.”
Representative Perry was presented with a framed Norman Rockwell painting depicting a traditional boy scout saluting behind the backdrop of the famous Boy Scout oath

PERRY & HOUSE GOP PUSHES FOR SALES TAX HOLIDAY
The 19-member Republican House delegation sent a letter to House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi and Senate President Therese Murray yesterday lobbying for a fourth-consecutive annual sales tax holiday, when goods within a certain price range can be purchased unfettered by the 5 percent levy. Reacting to a Springfield Republican story that the holiday likely wasn’t in the works this year, Minority Leader Bradley Jones and others wrote, “Tax-free retail days encourage those who are not normally willing or able to make big-ticket purchases to go forward with their shopping.” They said retailers see “robust sales” during the traditionally slow summer months, and said last year’s holiday generated “several million dollars in increased sales, but cost the state only $16 million in revenue.” The GOP also wants a two-day holiday cemented permanently in the state calendar.

Representative Perry Announces Passage of Comprehensive Identity Theft Legislation
Boston – Representative Jeffrey Davis Perry (R-Sandwich) is pleased to announce the House of Representatives has passed comprehensive legislation strengthening the laws to protect against identity theft. The unanimous approval of the conference committee report contained many essential provisions agreed upon by both the House and Senate.
Among other important provisions, this legislation strengthens the definition of personal information and imposes well defined standards when disposing of personal information as well as outlines steps that must be taken by entities in the event of a security breach. It requires that entities take prudent safeguards to protect personal data from, amongst other things, identity theft.
The new law requires entities to promptly report security breaches when they occur. Any entity that violates these strict reporting standards shall be subject to a civil fine of up to $100 per data subject affected with a maximum fine of $50,000 for each instance of improper disposal of personal information. The law outlines that any records or documents containing personal information, proposed to be destroyed or disposed of, must be shredded, redacted, burned, pulverized, or otherwise made unreadable.
The law also allows consumers to impose a security freeze on their credit. Once they request a security freeze, a consumer reporting agency must place take action no later than three business days after receiving the request. The consumer reporting agency must send a written confirmation within five business days after receiving the request. The security freeze will remain in place until the consumer requests that it be lifted. This provision will strengthen consumer confidence and ensure that their credit is protected from identity thieves.
Representative Perry has been a strong proponent of this legislation and was pleased to see its passage. “I believe that the passage of this legislation will significantly increase the personal and financial security of the residences of the Commonwealth. As our society evolves and identity theft becomes more prevalent, we need to be proactive in protecting citizens against this new form of crime. I am confident that through this legislation we will tighten access to our personal information and give the necessary tools to consumers who find themselves victims.”
